The
first of May was chosen as an International Worker’s Day by the Socialists and
Communists of the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair in
Chicago in the late 19th century. However, if you ask people in
Macedonia about a detailed explanation of why we celebrate this day, they will
just say that it’s a “worker’s rights day”. To celebrate this day, we like to
go on a picnic, make barbecue and have some beers. This is how 90% of the young
people would spend their time on this day in Macedonia, so some may jokingly
refer to it as a “beer and barbecue” day. If you are a stranger in Macedonia
and go on a trip with your Macedonian friends, you are guaranteed to see
something different and have a good time.
